Fiasco Focus | KAY KWOK
Kay Kwok’s latest collection looked to be plucked from another planet, drawing comparisons to fleet uniforms on the latest Star Trek voyage.
There were pebble grey separates constructed out of super-fine Neoprene, fastened with magnets so there were no visible zippers or buttons. The minimalist aesthetic was offset with bold geometric prints. A violet, strobe-like pattern transformed simple suits into canvases for light and colour, recalling the transformative works of Dan Flavin and Anthony McCall. The main conversation starter, however, was the footwear. Kwok collaborated with fellow London College of Fashion graduate Youngwon Kim to create winklepickers with strategic cut-outs, Chelsea boots constructed out of printed Neoprene and a pair of fanned mandals that appeared like a rubbery, futuristic take on the dreaded Birkenstock.
